Bodega y Viñedos Catena encompasses the wines produced at the six Catena-family vineyards located in the Maipú, Luján de Cuyo, Tupungato and San Carlos regions of Mendoza, as well as a winery in the Vista Flores district of the Tunuyán region. Adopted by its founder Nicola Catena in 1902, the distinguished name returns the family to its vineyard-centric roots, recalling the principles the winery was founded upon – family, grapes, and place. Bodega y Viñedos Catena includes the winery’s new La Marchigiana natural wine range, as well as the Catena Alta, D.V. Catena, Appellation, and Catena Classic wines.

Dr. Laura Catena is a Harvard and Stanford trained biologist and physician, founder of the Catena Institute of Wine in Argentina, and managing director of Bodega Catena Zapata (Est. 1902). The Catena Institute is dedicated to preserving the Malbec wine variety and to elevating Argentine wine. Under Laura’s leadership, Bodega Catena Zapata has reached new heights. The family winery earned six 100-point wine ratings, was voted most awarded winery in the world by VIVINO WINE STYLE AWARDS three years in a row and was chosen WORLD’S MOST ADMIRED WINE BRAND by Drinks International in 2020. Laura is author of Argentina’s definitive wine guide, “Vino Argentino” and her second book, “Gold in the Vineyards,” received the Best in Wine History award from Gourmand. She lives with her husband and three children between Mendoza, Argentina, and San Francisco, California, where she volunteers as a street physician with the Department of Public Health.

The grandson of Italian immigrants, Dr. Nicolás Catena Zapata grew up working in the Catena family vineyards. He studied Economics at Columbia University and later, after visiting the Napa Valley during the early 1980s, he was inspired to start a wine revolution back in Argentina. He pioneered high-altitude viticulture and is responsible for the rebirth of the ancient Malbec variety in Argentina.

The Saint Felicien brand dates back more than 40 years, when we launched our first Cabernet Sauvignon for the Argentine market. It was the first 100% varietal wine produced in Argentina, a trend soon to be followed by other wineries in the country. Currently, Saint Felicien is made in the same style that was previously reserved for export wines. The great success achieved in demanding markets such as England, the United States, Canada, Germany and the Netherlands inspired us to launch this international wine style in Argentina.

The grapes for D.V. Catena are sourced from high altitude, mountain vineyards planted at elevations between 3297’ and 3957’ above sea level. Years of research, lead to the identification of the ideal “terroir” that could offer the highest concentration of aromas and flavors.

The grapes for D.V. Catena are sourced from high altitude, mountain vineyards planted at elevations between 3297’ and 3957’ above sea level. Years of research, lead to the identification of the ideal “terroir” that could offer the highest concentration of aromas and flavors.

Family vintners for over 100 years, the Catenas are recognized for their pioneering role in high-altitude viticulture in Argentina. This Cabernet Franc is sourced from the family´s historic vineyards in San Carlos. Here, the sandy-loam soils and mountainous climate yield a wine with concentrated ripe red berries, a touch of eucalyptus and black pepper, robust tannins and smooth lengthy finish.

Family vintners for over 100 years, the Catenas are recognized for their pioneering role in high-altitude viticulture in Argentina. Over two decades ago, Nicolás Catena Zapata selected the Tupungato appellation with its pebble-covered soils and extreme cool nights, to plant the family's Chardonnay vineyards. Tupungato lies between 4000 and 5000ft in the foothills of the Andes mountains. This Chardonnay is deeply aromatic with expressive citrus fruit aromas and rich mineral notes.

Sémillon Blend

Luján de Cuyo Appellation is known for its clay-rich soils and cool nights. Deeply aromatic with expressive citrus and peach with a rich and mineral finish. Pairs well with vegetables, pasta and grilled white meats. This blend of Semillon and Chenin Blanc is Argentina’s century-old traditional white wine.

In the 1950´s, Don Domingo Catena began sourcing Malbec from the historic vineyards of Vista Flores. Domingo prized the region's Malbec for its dark colored and structured tannins.

The Catena wines are a special assemblage of High Mountain Estate Vineyards made by fourth generation vintner, Laura Catena and chief winemaker, Alejandro Vigil. Although we have found that most of the Catena wines are consumed shortly after release, we are pleased to see that they age beautifully for ten to twenty years. Through decades of study and exploration within Mendoza's high altitude mountain terroirs, the Catena family has identified special locations for its Estate vineyards. From the marriage of these historic vineyards emerges a wine of unique character that has natural balance, concentration and a distinct varietal identity.

Catena Alta is an assemblage of historic rows within the Catena family State vineyards. The blend of these historic rows, like the combination of sounds that create a symphony, give us highly aromatic and elegant wine that speaks for the terroir and the vines that have been tended by the four generations of the Catena Family. "Alta" means high in Spanish. This makes reference to the high altitude vineyards from where the grapes are sourced, and to the high end wines that are produced with this special grapes.

At almost 5,000 feet elevation in the Andean foothills, the Adrianna vineyard's calcareous soils and cool climate are the promised land of Chardonnay. The fruit from the Adrianna vineyard has a purity of flavors and a minerality that is particular to this vineyard and can not be found anywhere else in Mendoza. The nearby, gravel-covered Domingo Vineyard makes up 20% of the blend. Elevage: 14 months in French oak barrels.

Before the world recognized Catena’s Argentina as “malbec country”, the winery was known for its old-world style Cabernet Sauvignon born in the clay-soils of Agrelo. The family cherishes its historic Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in Agrelo and Tupungato, particularly for their ageability and classic flavors. Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from Lot 3 of the La Pirámide vineyard, Lot 2 of the Domingo vineyard and Lot 2 of the Nicasia Vineyard.

Catena Alta is an assemblage of historic rows within the Catena family Estate vineyards. The blend of these historic rows, like the marriage of sounds that create a symphony, yields a highly aromatic and elegant wine that speaks for the earth and the vines that have been tended by the Catenas for four generations. The Catena Alta wines can usually be drunk starting at three years after harvest and into the following one to two decades.

Nicola Catena planted his first Malbec vineyard in Mendoza in 1902. His grandson, Nicolás Catena, is known as the man who revolutionized Argentine wine and introduced high altitude Malbec to the world. The Historic Catena Zapata vineyards are planted with the Catena family’s proprietary selection of malbec plants: the Catena Cuttings. Catena Alta Malbec is sourced from Lot 18 of the Angélica vineyard, Lot 4 of the La Pirámide vineyard, Lot 1 of the Nicasia vineyard, Lot 9 of the Adrianna vineyard and Lot 6 of the Angélica Sur vineyard.

It is a malbec wine, a variety of French origin that found in our country the most suitable place to develop and become the flagship of the national vitiviniculture.
