Since creating the first world-class Torrontés in the early 1980s in Cafayate, in the Salta province, to the present day at the foot of the Andes in Mendoza, Susana Balbo’s vision has forged a path that has positioned us at the pinnacle of wine producers. That passion has spanned generations and passed to her children Ana and José, along with a nearly hundred-strong team that completes the family. José Lovaglio Balbo is a third generation winemaker from a local family with a rich tradition in winemaking and grape growing. At the age of 18, he set off for the USA to study viticulture and enology at UC Davis in California. He lived there for five years, learning from great teachers, and got his degree in 2007.

In 2008, José returned to Argentina with the goal of making wine and joined Zemlia, a small family-run winery in Mendoza. Then, in 2011, he joined the winemaking team of Susana Balbo and began to work with his mother. He now leads the R&D initiatives at the winery.
His winemaking approach embodies the will of his generation: winemakers that take the heritage of their parents to the next step and dig further into Argentina’s terroirs.

José Lovaglio Balbo

Susana Balbo studied enology in Mendoza, Argentina, and graduated cum laude in 1981, becoming the first female enologist in the country with a university degree.

With a career of more than fourty years in the industry, Susana is certainly the most recognized Argentinian female winemaker. Also known as “Queen of Torrontés” because of her work and unique bond with the variety, she served as president of Wines of Argentina for three terms, during which Argentinian wine exports increased exponentially taking the country to stand out in the world wine map.

In 2015, she was elected to the National Congress, and in 2017 Argentinian President Mauricio Macri selected her as Chair of the W20 (Women’s 20), a G20 working group dedicated to women’s empowerment on a global scale.

The British magazine The Drinks Business named her ‘Woman of the Year’ in 2015, and in 2018 included her in their top 10 list of ‘The world’s most influential women in wine’. In 2019, she was awarded the BRAVO Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of the Americas, and in 2020 she was named Winemaking Legend by the world-respected wine journalist Tim Atkin.

She is currently the owner and founder of Susana Balbo, her family-run winery, one of the most important and renowned in Argentina.

Edgardo Del Popolo is an Argentinian wine industry veteran and one of the most respected and consulted Argentinian viticulturist. He studied enology and agronomy at Universidad Nacional de Cuyo in Mendoza. Since he graduated, he has travelled the wine world visiting old and new wine regions, as well as the most important wine markets, participating in different tastings, seminars and conferences, road shows, wine clinics and tutored tastings.

In 1998, he took the position of Director of Viticulture at Doña Paula. There, he was in charge of both vineyards and winery operations. Since 2013, Edy serves as General Manager of Susana Balbo, where he works with a solid enological team headed by Susana herself. He contributes with his experienced vision from the vineyard and is responsible for all of BenMarco wines.

Due to his technical training, Edy is constantly looking after the quality of the wines from the field. His ambition is to define Argentinian terroirs’ characteristics in order to make wines that speak for themselves.

Edgardo Del Popolo

Gustavo Bertagna is a licensed enologist and horticulturalist educated at the Don Bosco University, in Mendoza. He also holds a postgraduate degree in Quality Planning and Management from the Vineyards to Wine. 

During his academic studies, he traveled abroad to gain experience and learn new techniques and styles of winemaking. In those trips, he exchanged experiences with winemakers from South Africa, Australia, France and New Zealand. 

In 2008, he was hired to join Susana Balbo as winemaker. Since then, he oversees every process from harvest on along with the rest of the team - determining the right time to pick the grapes, controlling temperatures and managing techniques during fermentation, bottling, and aging. He is also a part of the blending committee. 

Gustavo believes that, in order to be relevant in the world of wine, one must be bold, creative, and passionate. The wine industry is constantly evolving, and winemakers must evolve to stay on the cutting edge.

White

Pale gold with bright reflections. On the nose, this wine seduces with hints of white pear, white flowers and ripe peach. On the palate, it has a beautiful structure and acidity along with enticing fruit flavors.
Plenty of body for a wine that shows such delicate aromas and flavors. Fruity, floral and yet still quite dry.

White Blend

A very aromatic wine with floral and citrus notes combined with touches of fresh grass, white fruits
and orange. In the mouth, floral flavors, fresh and fruity, combine perfectly with the unctuousness of a
perfect aging in barrels. Its finish is mineral and persistent. Great potential for aging.

Beautiful deep violet color. It is a balanced and well-structured wine with flavors of raspberry, dark
plum and currant that feature plenty of refined savory accents. Hints of mineral and smoke appear on its
elegant, velvety and long finish. Well integrated oak and filigree tannins.

Intense ruby red color. Notes of dark berries such as blueberries, cassis and blackberry, and floral notes.
Subtle calcareous notes add complexity. Being a cold year, the wine displays very good natural acidity and it is in excellent balance with the alcohol. With tannic volume. Compact and intense wine.

A fresh, pure expression of the variety, this Malbec displays aromas of violets, cherries and spices. Fruity, with balanced acidity on the palate, notes of ripe red fruits and a subtle hint of oak.

Cabernet Sauvignon Blend

Deep, bright ruby red color. Aromas of dark berries, spices and notes of tomato leaves, contributed mainly by the two Cabernets (Sauvignon and Franc). The fruity aromas continue in the mouth, followed by excellent tension due to its natural acidity. The other varieties provide texture and roundness to the blend. It has an elegant and lingering finish. This wine has great aging potential and can be stored for up to 20 years.

Los Chacayes is an extraordinary terroir. Its sandy and rocky loam soil guarantees good permeability, limits the growth of the plant and ensures perfect ripening. BenMarco Malbec is a testimony of Valle de Uco, endowed with aromas of black berries, notes of violets, pronounced acidity, firm tannins and great length.

BenMarco Cabernet comes entirely from alluvial soils in Los Árboles, Uco Valley. It is a floral, rich and concentrated wine. On the palate, notes of black fruits, black pepper and cassis are perfectly well balanced with fine grained tannins that give a nice tension to the wine.

Gualtallary is well-known for its chalky alluvial soils which allow adequate water drainage. The result in
BenMarco Expresivo, is a wine with deep, bright ruby color. It has chalk, earthy, floral, peppercorn tree fruits notes. It is a vertical wine with ultra-fine grained tannins, long after taste and great ageing potential.

A pure expression of the varietal, with aromas of plum, currant, espresso and mocha tinged with
spice and smoke from the French oak. Herbal notes, bright acidity and fine tannins create balance and structure on the palate.

Crisp, refreshing and aromatic, with a bouquet of citrus fruits, passion fruit, lechee and white flowers. Lively acidity, a hint of creaminess and a long, mineral finish add depth and balance to the palate.

BenMarco Sin Límites Chardonnay is a pure expression of the variety: citric, floral and with
delicate herbs, complemented by earthy and mineral notes due to the alluvial calcareous terroirs of Gualtallary. It is an austere and vibrant wine in the mouth, with an expressive palate.

BenMarco Sin Límites Organic Malbec is very pure on the nose, with a pronounced fruity profile, especially red fruit, which represents the typicity of the terroir. It is affable in the mouth, with fine-textured tannins.

Deep red color. This wine displays vibrant aromas of blueberries, notes of cake shop and pepper, with floral and spicy notes. The acidity is intense and balanced. The oak is beautifully blended with elegant,
fine-grained tannins. A subtle minerality provides freshness and good length.

Clean and austere aromas with the region’s typical notes, such as spices and dry grass, and a slight
earthy character, such as chalk. A subtle vegetable trace in the mid-palate complemented by fine and
precise tannins. Great aging potential. Before drinking, it is recommended to let it air for a while in
the glass.

BenMarco Sin Límites Gualtallary is a Malbec that reflects the terroir calcareous nature. On the nose,
hints of pepper, especially pink pepper, and calcareous notes predominate, while on the mouth the
austerity and grainy texture stand out. Incomparably long finish and great definition. When first smelt, it can be perceived as shy or tight, so decanting is recommended.

Clean and austere aromas, with some typical notes of the region such as spices and dry
grass. Slightly earthy character, such as chalk. A subtle vegetable trace in the mid-palate,
complemented by fine and precise tannins. Great aging potential. Before drinking, it is
recommended to let it air for a while in the glass.

Intense notes of red plums, cherries and dried apricots stand out, combined with a touch of violet perfume. The subtle calcareous notes add complexity. It displays great body, structure and complexity. The acidity and fine-grained tannins balance give a unique and lingering sensation.

Malbec Blend

A lovely pale salmon pink color and a fine floral profile, with delicate hints of nuts. In the mouth, its freshness and juicy acidity are in perfect combination with flavors of currants and strawberries. It has very good balance and structure. Due to its pleasant tension on the palate it can be enjoyed by itself or with meals.

Elegant red color with purple hues. It displays aromas of red berries, raspberry and violets followed by notes of black pepper, tobacco and chocolate. The mouth is complex and balanced, with soft, ripe tannins that outline an elegant finish.
