A brief history

Bodega y Viñedos Catena encompasses the wines produced at the six Catena-family vineyards located in the Maipú, Luján de Cuyo, Tupungato and San Carlos regions of Mendoza, as well as a winery in the Vista Flores district of the Tunuyán region. Adopted by its founder Nicola Catena in 1902, the distinguished name returns the family to its vineyard-centric roots, recalling the principles the winery was founded upon – family, grapes, and place. Bodega y Viñedos Catena includes the winery’s new La Marchigiana natural wine range, as well as the Catena Alta, D.V. Catena, Appellation, and Catena Classic wines.

  • Dr. Nicolás Catena Zapata

“Nicolás Catena Zapata is a figure in Argentina of the stature of Robert Mondavi in Napa and Angelo Gaja in Piedmont. He inspired an entire region to strive for a higher level of quality by his successful exploration of high-altitude vineyards and rigorous clonal selection,” says Master Sommelier, Larry Stone. The grandson of Italian immigrants, Dr. Nicolás Catena Zapata grew up working in the Catena family vineyards. He studied Economics at Columbia University and later, after visiting the Napa Valley during the early 1980s, he was inspired to start a wine revolution back in Argentina. He pioneered high-altitude viticulture and is responsible for the rebirth of the ancient Malbec variety in Argentina.

The Saint Felicien brand dates back more than 40 years, when we launched our first Cabernet Sauvignon for the Argentine market. It was the first 100% varietal wine produced in Argentina, a trend soon to be followed by other wineries in the country. Currently, Saint Felicien is made in the same style that was previously reserved for export wines. The great success achieved in demanding markets such as England, the United States, Canada, Germany and the Netherlands inspired us to launch this international wine style in Argentina.

In 1898 the Marchigiano Nicola Catena arrived in Argentina with his ancestral tradition of preserving wines by its own tannins, matured in clay pots. "La Marchigiana" honors the natural and sulfite-free homemade wines legacy with this very limited production of Criolla Chica, Bonarda, Chardonnay, Moscatel and Malbec, fermented and aged in clay pots where full body and longevity are gained through long-term skin contact. A naked wine in which grape and terroir speak.

The Catena wines are a special assemblage of High Mountain Estate Vineyards made by fourth generation vintner, Laura Catena and chief winemaker, Alejandro Vigil. Although we have found that most of the Catena wines are consumed shortly after release, we are pleased to see that they age beautifully for ten to twenty years. Through decades of study and exploration within Mendoza's high altitude mountain terroirs, the Catena family has identified special locations for its Estate vineyards. From the marriage of these historic vineyards merges a wine of unique character that has natural balance, concentration and a distinct varietal identity.
